Twenty years later the beliefs and materialism of the West have begun to influence the lifestyle and values of its inhabitants.

Raju, age 27, unmarried, gives lessons in Hindi to foreigners while he waits to be appointed to a teaching post. He longs to travel and to experience the casual social freedoms of the young people of the West, but it isn’t until Linda, a 39-year-old American, becomes his student that his life begins to change.

In time Raju gets a job in a distant village and must move out of his loving, supportive family home. He struggles to take care of himself in a place that is without electricity and whose residents find his unmarried state to be a threat to their daughters. As pressure mounts, he reluctantly weds and finds himself living the type of life he had hoped to avoid. This well-told story speaks of the importance of being true to yourself, no matter what it takes.
